International Women's Day: A Few of My Favorite Authors

 I'm one of those folks who wish they were blessed with an ability to write a compelling, fascinating, and unputdownable novel. Unfortunately, it's just not in my wheelhouse. That doesn't stop me from admiring authors who have that talent and discipline to craft worlds I get to live in, just for a little while. 

On today, International Women's Day, I am posting a few of my favorite authors. Over the years, I've noticed I read novels written by women about 90% of the time. It's not a purposeful thing I do; however, it's just what I'm drawn to and enjoy. I have my favorite male authors as well. But today it's all about the women! 

Here are a few of my favorite authors, in no particular order. They write historical fiction, science fiction/fantasy, contemporary fiction, mysteries and thrillers. This is by no means all of my favorite authors (I can't have just one!) but they definitely have given me great reading memories:

No Book Buying for 40 Days: Testing My Resolve and Will Power

I spent a recent Saturday morning gearing myself up to sort through the stacks of books I have at home. For weeks I've stared at them, added to them, and thought I should probably look through them. But then I would ignore that, or put it off. I'm really good at procrastination when it comes to looking at my TBR piles and deciding what to do with them.  I managed about a full 10 minutes of shifting through them before I became overwhelmed, re-stacked everything, and left my books alone.  Well heck. This isn't going to work, I thought. I can't even casually look through my books without feeling stressed. I realized Lent is coming up, and while I am a very lapsed Catholic, I decided it would be a good chance to test my desire to read through my TBR piles. Once I found out Lent begins fairly soon (February 26), I really felt strongly that this was my chance to break my habit of adding to my TBR pile without also reading from my TBR pile. A New Year, A New Reading Goal, and the Temptation of Gift Cards

My boyfriend is a pretty wonderful man. Every year for the past 15 years, he has given me gift cards to Barnes & Noble at Christmas.  I always ask for them, because I want to play it safe and make sure they're on my list.  He's generous, but it still only it takes me about one month to spend all the gift cards.  Last year I made it to mid-February.  This year I'm going to try and stretch them out to at least April.  Working at a public library helps keep my spending down, but I still can have a hard time controlling myself at a bookstore.   2018...you're the year I will read new titles, but also tackle my bookcases.  They are now filled with more books that I haven't read than books I've read. That is a problem. I can't give any away to friends until I've read them. Trust me, I've tried to pick out books I could give away, but I just can't do it without reading them first.  Pulling from my bookcases, here's what I'm going to read this

The Last Garden in England by Julia Kelly

  I needed to escape from my October reading for a bit and found the perfect book to do just that. This novel will be out in January, 2021 so if you're a fan of Julia Kelly you'll have a few months to wait.  I'm one of those people who love all things gardening-especially flower gardens. I am, however, not one to be out in a garden working on it every chance I get. I love the results, but not so much all the work to get there. I used to have a lot of flowers in my yard, but I've scaled back massively the past few years because I don't have the time, and I've realized that whomever follows me in my house may not want a lot of flower beds around. I still have perennials, but I've gone to simple, easy to care for summer flowers and plants in pots. I still have a wish for a forever home with a field of wildflowers somewhere on the property. My partner has agreed on this, so hopefully in the future I'll have that gardening wish come true.  This novel has quit
