The Heart of Henry Quantum

Gambar
I wasn't sure what to expect from this quirky novel.  I have a few things that struck me as I read the book; ideas about love and the idea of wandering through life with purpose.   Henry Quantum is a 40 year old man who lives in San Francisco with his wife Margaret.  It's December 23rd, and Henry realizes he hasn't purchased a gift for his wife for Christmas.  He decides he wants to buy her Chanel No. 5, and after a meeting at his advertising job, he takes a long lunch, determined to walk to Macy's and buy the perfume.   Except Henry's simple task takes him on a journey that has him thinking about physics, the stars, buddhism, the meaning of life, and Christmas songs.  He's a bit absent minded, what with all the ruminations that continually fill Henry's mind.  His marriage to Margaret is stale; she's always busy as a successful realtor, and disappointed in Henry's unfulfilled potential.   But on Henry's wanderings, he runs into Daisy.  T...

50 of My Favorite Books: Part One

Gambar
This month, I'm looking back over the years and posting 50 of my all-time favorite books.  I don't have one favorite book, but I certainly have many that are near and dear to my heart.  They are the books that will never leave my house (or my heart).  Some are from childhood, others from as recently as the past few years.  God willing, I'll have another 50 years to read more amazing tales.   Here's my first batch of favorite reads.  They are in no particular order, and run the gamut between fun romance, fantasy, and a heart-breaker that became a modern literary classic.  Some of these novels are the first in a series; I've listed just the first novel in the series, but I consider the series as one giant favorite read. This series is everything I love about fantasy fiction! Still makes me cry My first Katie Fforde novel.  Fan for life. This book made me a fan of Alice Hoffman.  Fantastic! An out of print series that I read 25 years ago....

Paris for One and Other Stories by Jojo Moyes

Gambar
Can't get enough of Jojo Moyes?   Paris for One  is a delightful tidbit that's sure to please while you wait for another full length novel from Jojo.   I'm a fan of Jojo Moyes; I've read just about all of her novels.  What I like most is her ability to write a completely different novel each time--contemporary, historical, gut wrenching boo-hoo love stories, and complex relationships that can make a happy ending seem like a monumental task--but worth the effort.   This collection of short stories starts off with the story Paris for One , and it's the longest of the stories.  Nell is a meek young lady who decides to treat herself and her loser boyfriend Pete to a weekend in Paris.  It's her first trip out of England, and she's a bit nervous.  Pete texts her that he just can't join her, so she decides to board the train to Paris and go on without him, hoping he'll join her the next day.  Yes, you can guess what happens next.  Ne...

Upcoming Reviews for November...A Little Romance, a Little Paranormal, a Little Fiction and Special November Postings

Gambar
I am having a hard time grasping the fact that November is just around the corner.  October flew by (it helped being on vacation for 2 weeks!) and I'm hurrying to read some spooky reads this month.  Those spooky reads will spill over into November, but they'll be followed by some fun Christmas reads.  There's nothing I love more than reading Christmas romances.   But before I can transition to Christmas, I've got a bit on my TBR list to read and review.  I'm getting excited thinking about my annual top ten favorite reads of the year, coming at the end of December.  There's still plenty of time to find more gems in my reading pile.   My reading for November is a bit of a mix, but I think it's a good balance.  Recommends from friends, publisher reviews, and books I've picked out all come together to make an interesting melange.  And that's the great thing about books, right?  They take you anywhere you want to go.   Besides ...

I'm Back from Vacation...and I read The Whole Town's Talking by Fannie Flagg

Gambar
I had a wonderful vacation:  two weeks in Italy with friends.  We traveled to Rome, then the seaside town of Salerno, and finished up in Venice.  The weather was beautiful, the food was great, and it was a trip of a lifetime.   Of course, I had my books with me, and got some reading done on the plane rides and at night before hitting the sack (but not much--full days of walking everywhere had me tired and ready for sleep!).  I'll be posting my review of three Heather Graham Krewe of Hunters novels later this week.  Simon Green will have to wait...but in the meantime, I did read the new Fannie Flagg novel that's being published at the end of November.  I got sucked into it and read it on the flight home.  9 hours in various planes gives you time to get some serious reading done! I must confess this is my first Fannie Flagg novel.  I have a few on my bookshelves, bought with the intention of reading them right away.  But of course lif...

It's That Time Of Year: Witches and Romance. I Know. It Sounds Odd.

Gambar
It doesn't look like a romance, but it is--and it leaves you wondering just which fine handsome man she'll end up with by the end of this series! Would Be Witch  is the first in a trilogy (there may be more after that) by Kimberly Frost.  Tammy Jo Trask lives in the small town of Duvall, Texas with her Aunt and Mom.  She also has a family ancestor, Edie, who lives in a locket.  Edie is a 1920's stunner, and a powerful witch even in death.  She's always around to give Tammy Jo some advice. Tammy Jo is the only one in her family that doesn't have the special witchy powers that run through each generation.  She does, however, have a spectacular talent for making baked goods.  If you're on a diet, please ignore the references to cupcakes, torte, and cream cheese frosting that are sprinkled throughout the novel. Tammy Jo is divorced from her childhood sweetheart, a local deputy (and serious hot guy) Zach.  They still have 'sleepovers' and act like a co...
